The Night that's Better than Thousand Months
Laylatul Qadr, or The Night of Power, is one of the holiest nights in Islam. It is a night that is "better than a thousand months" (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3), a time when Allah's mercy, forgiveness, and blessings are at their peak. It is the night when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, marking the beginning of divine guidance for humanity.
For Muslims, Laylatul Qadr is an opportunity to seek forgiveness, multiply rewards, and make heartfelt du'as that can change their destiny. But what exactly is Laylatul Qadr? Why is it so significant? When does it occur? And how should Muslims observe it?
Let’s dive into the depths of this extraordinary night.
What is Laylatul Qadr?
Laylatul Qadr is an Arabic term that translates to "The Night of Power", "The Night of Decree", or "The Night of Destiny." It is a night that carries immense value, as described in the Qur’an:
"Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." (Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-3)
This means that acts of worship, charity, and devotion performed on this night are rewarded as if they were done continuously for more than 83 years.
This night is also when the decrees for the coming year are written by Allah’s command. In Surah Ad-Dukhan, Allah mentions:
"On that night is made distinct every precise matter." (Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:4)
It is a night of divine decisions, where the fate of every soul, including provisions, life span, and other affairs, is decreed.
The History of Laylatul Qadr
When Did Laylatul Qadr Start?
Laylatul Qadr was the night when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). This monumental event took place in the Cave of Hira on Jabal al-Nour (The Mountain of Light) in Makkah. The first revelation was:
"Read! In the name of your Lord who created. He created man from a clinging substance. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous—Who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not."
(Surah Al-'Alaq 96:1-5)
This revelation marked the beginning of Islam and changed the course of history forever.
Why is Laylatul Qadr Important?
1. It is the Night of the Qur’an’s Revelation
Without the Qur’an, there would be no Islam. Laylatul Qadr is the night when Allah’s final guidance to humanity began, making it one of the most significant nights in Islamic history.
2. Worship on This Night Equals a Lifetime of Rewards
A single night of worship on Laylatul Qadr is better than 1,000 months (83+ years). Imagine earning more rewards in one night than a lifetime of worship!
3. The Decrees for the Year Are Written
This is the night when Allah determines the affairs of His creation for the coming year. Who will live, who will die, who will be granted blessings, and who will face trials—all are decreed on this night.
4. Sins Are Forgiven
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever stands (in prayer) during Laylatul Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 1901; Sahih Muslim, 760)
When is Laylatul Qadr?
The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is unknown. However, the Prophet ﷺ instructed us to seek it during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly in the odd-numbered nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th).
Some scholars believe it is more likely to occur on the 27th night of Ramadan, based on various narrations. However, to maximize the chances of catching this blessed night, Muslims should increase their worship throughout the last ten nights.
